Description

In Terra Aliena

The album In Terra Aliena (In foreign territory) includes songs that tell of exile and longing for the land that had to be abandoned due to war, expulsion and other dangers & threats. The songs also testify to a different kind of exile, the alienation that the unfamiliar new environment brings.

Migration is off all times, and certainly not just a phenomenon of the present. This album’s music addresses the mindset of people from another time, the 16th century. In 1492, Columbus arrived in America and Spain conquered the Nazaré dynasty of Granada, putting an end to the Muslim rule on the peninsula. In that same year, the Jews were driven out of Spain or forced to convert to Christianity. All this caused Muslims and Jews to flee to the north of Africa. Roman Catholics from Castile and Aragon left for America. Large numbers of seafarers and invaders were never to return to the peninsula.

Given all this, we can say that there were enough reasons for poetry, and consequently song, to introduce a new leitmotif, namely ‘in foreign territory’.Those who are exiled, loose everything familiar and loved in one fell swoop. The same thing happens to anyone who knocks on a closed heart in vain: a lonely journey from everything to nothing. These are just some of the subjects of the songs recorded in the famous Spanish and Portuguese songbooks of the period such as theCancionero Musical de Palacio and Cancionero Musical de Lisboa. On the album In terra aliena gems from these songbooks by composers as Juan del Encina, Francisco de Peñalosa, Pedro de Escobar as well as anonymous composers, all of whom excellently expressed in sound the theme of alienation and the fragility of life ‘In foreign territory’.

Música Temprana

Música Temprana explores the repertoire from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, not only in Latin America, but also from sources of the Spanish Empire of that era. Through this Música Temprana wishes to map the musical development in Latin America from the moment the first conquistadores set foot in the New World up to the coming of age of baroque music on Latin American soil itself.

The ensemble’s repertoire is mostly the result of own research by the founder and conductor Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel. Since the first concert in 2001 the ensemble released eight albums and organized performances in important festivals, such as the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, Trigonale in Austria, the Early Music Festival in Stockholm, the Mozart Festival in Rovereto, Italy, and Musica Sacra in Maastricht.

Press reviews

MusicWeb International, October 2024

Each piece is of excellent quality, many have a melodiousness which may listeners invite to sing along. If I have to mention a highlight, it may be Triste está la gentil dama by Contreras, which is just wonderful, and is given such a moving performance by Luciano Cueto…Música Temprana always has great singers in its ranks, and that is no different this time. The singing is just exquisite and so much to the point in each piece. The instrumentalists do a great job here as well; their subtle and effective playing greatly contributes to the impact of these performances. They can be admired on their own in some instrumental items.

As one may understand, this disc is something special, because of its subject, the music chosen to illustrate it, and the way it is performed. Don’t miss it!

Positive Feedback, September 2024

The baroque and early music group, Música Temprana, are consistently excellent. They are worth seeking out if you have any interest in music of this period played on period instruments….The poems collected in this album are about the themes of the exile: the letters, the moment of departure, being a captive in a foreign country and searching for a suitable place for a grave, to avoid the eternal suffering of the exile…Somber stuff—reflected in achingly beautiful music and poetry. Beautifully performed, supremely well recorded.

Recorded in the Pieterskerk, Utrecht (The Netherlands) we have a natural acoustic venue that complements and enhances the music, instruments and voices. Cobra Records owner and recording engineer, Tom Peeters, captures this superbly. I’ve been listening to the binaural DSD256 recording of this album. The clarity and precision with which this binaural recording reflects these performances is uncanny. It’s addictive. If you listen on headphones, you really should hear these binaural files. Tom has outdone himself in both the binaural and stereo recordings of these wonderful musicians. I’m sure the multichannel version must be similarly entrancing.

Music Frames, augustus 2024

Música Temprana is a very skilled ensemble that performs these centuries-old compositions with love and respect for tradition. Fantastic musicians who, with the right intonation and performance practice, take you to the In Terra Aliena (In a Strange Land). The album is therefore a convincing tribute, even a song of praise for everyone who was forced to leave their country.

NRC, augustus 2024 5 out of 5
